Glycosylated hemoglobin, HbA1c, is a good measure of blood sugar, or glucose control, and according to researchers in the Department of Cardiology, Cumhurivet University in Turkey, it is far more than just a number. Their study, published in the Turkish cardiology journal, looked at HbA1c levels and how fast blood was able to flow to the heart muscle. The heart is made up mostly of a special type of muscle that is fed its own blood supply through the coronary arteries. That is how the heart receives the oxygen and nutrients it needs to keep doing its job. High levels of sugar can damage blood vessels and the coronary arteries are apparently no exception. Fifty-four participants with Type 2 diabetes and coronary arteries that appeared normal in photographs were included in the study. HbA1c levels were measured on the same day that more photographs were taken and the amount of blood flow through the three main coronary arteries was measured.
